Man in court following street assault on woman in Haverhill
A 72-year-old man from Haverhill has appeared in court after a woman was assaulted in the street.
Police were called on Thursday, December 18, at 2.20pm, to reports that a woman in her 40s had been grabbed by the throat and pushed by a man on Jubilee Walk.
A short time later officers arrested Robert Rooney, of Eastern Avenue, on suspicion of non-fatal intentional strangulation and he was taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning.
Rooney was charged with assault and remanded in custody on Friday, December 19, and appeared before Ipswich Magistrates (pictured above) on Saturday, December 20.
He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one day’s detention, already served while he was in custody.
