Planning application submitted for works at Olding Road site in Bury St Edmunds for new recreational leisure facilities

A planning application has been submitted to the local planning authority for the redevelopment of a disused site.

West Suffolk Council which owns the Olding Road site and is the applicant, is looking to refurbish the former depot and part of the warehouse to make them suitable for a trampoline park, padel courts and a further recreational leisure use.

Enabling works, that do not require planning permission, have already began with the demolition of internal structures that are unsuitable for refurbishment.

The planning application is seeking approval for the following:

• change of use and part demolition of existing warehouse/depot (class B8) to leisure/recreation use (class E(d));
• replacement roof and cladding; and
• associated infrastructure, parking and landscaping works.

Diane Hind, the cabinet member for Resources at West Suffolk Council, said: “The council hopes that obtaining planning permission will enable leisure developments which supports our Thriving Communities strategic priority, allow a significant solar for business project which supports our Environmental Resilience strategic priority, and bring a net return to the council which will be reinvested in essential services.

“This is part of the council’s commitment to deliver an exciting project that meets the current needs of the community but also allows us to be flexible with the future use.”

A Notice of Intended Demolition will be issued in due course to cover the partial demolition of the former warehouse.
