Comedian John Kearns is coming to The Apex later this month
Stand up comedian and double Edinburgh Comedy Award Winner John Kearns (pictured above) is bringing his “Tilting at Windmills” show to The Apex, in Bury St Edmunds, later this month.
You might recognise John – he’s been bewildered on “Taskmaster” (Channel 4), terrified on “Live at the Apollo” (BBC), and just about getting through “Never Mind the Buzzcocks” (Sky).
He also studied English and drama at the University of East Anglia in the mid-noughties, where he co-founded the Laugh Out Loud Club, in Norwich, and gigged regularly with his housemates, Pat Cahill, now a stand-up comedian and Greg James, now a Radio 1 DJ.
He also became working partners with Jon Brittain, who is now an Olivier Award-winning director.
Being both comedy and tragedy, “Tilting at Windmills” is a fragmented, digressing portrayal of a 38-year-old man’s life, alluding to books he hasn’t read, and touching on the modern condition. Oh! and VAT.
Laughs come from the absurd stories told by Kearns’ oddball alter ego, wearing an unkempt wig and oversized dentures.
Twelve years on since he first debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe, John is still the only comedian to have ever won the Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Show and Best Newcomer in the awards 45 year history.
His last stand-up comedy show, “The Varnishing Days”, was his biggest and most critically acclaimed tour show to date.
Directed by Jon Brittain, it won Best Show at the Chortle Awards 2024 and secured John’s third Melbourne Comedy Award nomination.
The show toured nationally, was twice extended and played over 100 dates, including four sold-out shows at the Bloomsbury Theatre.
