Man from London charged with attempted murder in Bury St Edmunds
A 47-year-old man from London has appeared in court, charged with attempted murder, following an attack in the Moreton Hall area of Bury St Edmunds last month.
Police were called at just before 10.15pm on Sunday, March 22, to reports of a serious incident in Mortimer Road.
A man aged in his 40s was found to have sustained stab wounds and was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
He remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
It was reported that five suspects wearing dark clothing and face coverings had fled the scene.
On Thursday, April 2, a 47-year-old man was arrested in south east London in connection with the incident and transported to Suffolk for questioning.
Sebestian Smith, of Radford Road, in Lewisham, has subsequently been charged with attempted murder.
He appeared at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court (pictured above) today, Saturday, April 4, and has been remanded in custody pending his next hearing at Ipswich Crown Court on Tuesday, May 5.
A 44-year-old man from the Brixton area of south London, who was first arrested on Wednesday, March 25, on suspicion of attempted murder in Bury St Edmunds, and rearrested on Friday, April 3, has been released on police bail.
A 38-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in Bury St Edmunds on Monday, March 30, also remains on police bail.
Police believe this was a targeted incident, with no wider threat to the local community.
Officers are continuing to progress numerous lines of enquiry and previously released details of three vehicles that have been seized by police and are suspected to have been used by the offenders.
These are: a black Nissan Note; a beige/light-coloured Nissan Note; and a black Nissan Micra.
Detectives are appealing for anyone who believes they saw any vehicles matching these descriptions in the vicinity of Mortimer Road on the night of Sunday, March 22, and this includes anyone driving in the area that may have dash camera footage.
