A14 closed in both directions following ‘serious collision’

Roads in the centre of Bury St Edmunds were clogged with traffic this morning (Thursday, May 7) following what police in Suffolk described as a “serious collision” on the A14.
The dual carriageway is closed in both directions between the Tesco/sugar beet factory junction 43 and the A134/Moreton Hall junction 44 following the incident.
It’s not known what vehicle/s were involved in the collision which took place just before 2.30am and if there are any injuries.
Suffolk Police said in a statement on X: “The A14 is currently closed in both directions at Bury St Edmunds following a serious collision. The road is closed between junction 43 and junction 44 and is expected to remain closed for some time.”
A diversion has been set up through the town centre and is expected to be in place all morning while emergency services attend the incident.
Just before 9am National Highways announced that the A14 remains closed in both directions, with delays of 30 minutes and three miles of congestion on the westbound carriageway.
The diversion details are as follows:
Eastbound
- Exit the A14 at J43 St Saviours and take the A143 into Bury St Edmunds to the A143/A1101/A1302 roundabout.
- At the roundabout take the second exit and follow the A1302 through Bury St Edmunds to the A1302/A134 roundabout.
- At the roundabout take the second exit and follow the A134 to rejoin the A14 eastbound J44 Moreton Hall.
Westbound
- Exit the A14 at J44 Moreton Hall take the first exit and continue on the A134 to the roundabout with the A1302.
- At the roundabout take the second exit and continue on the A1302 through Bury St Edmunds to the A1302/A143/A1101 roundabout.
- Take the second exit onto the A143 and rejoin the A14 westbound at J43 St Saviours.
