Fire in town centre adds to traffic gridlock from A14 collision
A fire at a house in the centre of Bury St Edmunds has combined to create more traffic misery for drivers today (Thursday, May 7).
The blaze broke out in Crown Street at around 10.45am and was said to have been caused when a blow torch being used on the roof ignited roofing materials.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said: “This incident is adding to the current heavy traffic being experienced in Bury St Edmunds and surrounding areas due to the closure of a section of the A14 following a crash in the early hours of this morning.”
Members of the public are being advised to avoid driving to, from, or around Bury St Edmunds unless “absolutely necessary.”
Fire crews from Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, Haverhill, Ixworth and Long Melford are on scene, along with teams from Thetford and Methwold in Norfolk.
UK Power Networks and Cadent have also been called to the incident.
