Sweet Caroline………… a wonderful trip down memory lane at the Theatre Royal

Caroline , a new musical inspired by the true story of Radio Caroline, the pirate radio station that broadcast off our own coastline, opened at the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds on Tuesday 16th June.

Set around 1964 to 1967 with a sound track of iconic 60s music, it led us through the first days of broadcasting through to the political launch of radio 1. The story is based around two lovers Robbie and Caroline who want to get out of the doldrums of everyday life and do something different. Robbie becomes a DJ on the ship and their life is never the same.

Written by Vikki Stone, who also appeared in the show, the cast featured Jake Halsey- Jones as Robbie and Claire Lee Shenfield as Caroline. All the cast were fantastic, wonderful musicians and great singers and the songs really got the audience involved with classics such as Dead End Streets originally by the Kinks, the Beach Boys Wouldn’t It Be, Nice, Hippy Hippy Shake, Gimme Some Lovin’, My Generation, Paint It Black Reach Out (I’ll Be There) and many many more all played so brilliantly.

The show was brought to the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds by the East Anglian Touring Consortium which includes Eastern Angles, HighTide, Landmark Theatres (New Theatre Peterborough), Mercury Theatre, Colchester, New Wolsey Theatre, Norwich Theatre Royal, Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch.

The last part of this tour is on Saturday 20th June at the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds. 

A great uplifting show that should be in the West End in our opinion.
