‘End of an era’ as Constitutional Club announces its closure after 135 years

It’s the “end of an era” for a club in the centre of Bury St Edmunds which has been operating for 135 years.
The Constitutional Club, (pictured above) in Guildhall Street, said it would be closing after posting a message on social media over the weekend following a members’ meeting.
It will close its doors for the final time this coming Saturday (February 8) as it struggles to keep afloat.
The post made on Sunday on its Facebook site https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=constitutional%20club-social%20club said: “It is with true sadness that we announce our last day open will be Saturday 8th February 2025.
“The announcement was made last night at the members meeting where many people attended.
- “Awful news, many a memory made at the con club during my time.”
- “Very sad news. A friendly place, welcoming to all and with a unique warm and tolerant atmosphere.”
- “Shocked to hear this. A sad day for the town.”
- “Such a shame… wonderful times had there and wonderful friendships made.”
- “This is so sad, another great place to meet and enjoy gone.”
- “Big respect and love to the committee new and old for constantly trying to diversify the club and bring in new business. It wasn’t in vain, each day the club opened its doors I would bet money that at least one person was able to leave feeling brighter and happie.”
Chairperson Emma Warren said everyone involved has been left feeling “deflated and gutted” by the situation.
She said that the business was not “generating enough profit to keep it going” and had been hit by the cost of living crisis.
As part of the closure, there will be half price drinks for members on Saturday.
